Being more conscious: About people, your environment and everything in between
Updated: Oct 15, 2019
We live in a society that is constantly changing, continually evolving and ever-present. There is so much we need to be more aware of. It’s easy to go about our daily lives consumed by our own needs and our own drama. There is so much more to the lives we live if we’d just take a look a little further outside of our own bubble.
This is why it may be helpful to be a more conscious individual - in a variety of aspects of life.
What does it mean to be conscious?
Being more conscious means that you’re not a mere observer of life but someone who is keenly aware of their surroundings, the people around them and the general goings-on of society.
The challenge with being a conscious person is that you need to be conscious in order to become more conscious - a little confusing? Don’t worry, by the end of this, you’ll be fully equipped on how to more aware of everything around you.
How to be more conscious
There are a few things you can do to increase your consciousness. These are just some things you should consider doing to make you more cognizant of life.
Seek the truth
In a world of ‘fake news’, find the truth. Do some research and make sure that what you’re reading or listening to is reliable.
Living with your head in the sand and accepting things at face-value just doesn’t fly in this day and age.
Be more open-minded
If you find yourself in situations where the conversation has taken a turn down a path you’re unfamiliar with, rather keep quiet. In your silence, you will learn so much about the situation rather than trying to speak on something you don’t know anything about.
ow, we don’t mean just standing there and not saying a single word but rather keep your opinion at bay. Ask questions, dive into the topic, find out more about it and educate yourself before speaking on or shutting down a topic you’re unfamiliar or uncomfortable with.
The environment is in dire states at the moment and instead of talking about it, we need to do more.
1. Use reusable bags
Instead of buying new shopping bags every time you go to the store, rather invest in some reusable bags and make sure you keep them on you when you’re out and about.
2. Print as little as possible
In this digital day and age, there’s hardly a need to print everything. Keeping things backed up online is a lot easier and way more environmentally friendly.
Recycling may sound tedious but there are plenty of ways to recycle at home. Find some recycling bags and start separating your rubbish, that is the first and easiest step in the recycling process.
4. Use reusable containers
Get rid of packaging and plastic containers by finding ways to reuse containers. There is an abundance of eco-friendly stores that allow you to refill containers instead of purchasing plastic or polystyrene containers.
Focus on using reusable bottles for water or cold drink or purchase reusable coffee mugs instead of always getting a ‘to go’ cup. These are just a few slight changes that can make a massive difference.
5. Save electricity
Use energy-efficient light bulbs instead of regular bulbs. They last longer, which will save you a bit of money. Make sure you turn off lights, the TV, geyser and other appliances when you are not using them.
6. Save water
Water is wasted more frequently than we can see. Turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth. Don’t turn your shower on until you’re ready to get in and keep them short. Limit your water usage while you wash dishes. Changing these small, old habits will be incredible for the environment - especially if we all start doing it.
7. Drive less or carpool when possible
Cars are harmful to the environment. Walking, riding a bike or carpooling are better options that help the environment and can help you get a little exercise in!
Carpooling is an effective way of saving petrol costs and helping the environment in the process.
This needs no explanation. We’re all painfully aware of the mass destruction plastic is causing. We’re at the stage now where we need to stop talking about how bad it is and what we should do about it - we should be actively making the changes by now.
Your energy is everything
The cheesy saying “your vibe attracts your tribe” is accurate. Your positive energy and the example you create is what the people around you will feel inspired by. If you’re actively making a change, the people around you will actively find ways to make a change.
In this life, the energy we have and the way we express it can make or break a situation. It’s no longer time to sit back and wait for something to happen. It’s time to make the change yourself.
It’s easy to live life in the passenger seat and hope someone else will do it. It’s convenient to take things at face value, to live a life with your head in the sand. It may be convenient and easy but that’s not the life we want to live. We want to instil change, to ignite passion and remind people that they can make a change in subtle but noticeable ways.
It’s time we join hands, make a difference and have an amazing time doing it! Feel free to take a look at some of the initiatives, we as the No Danger Diaries team, take part in to ensure that we’re living consciously and actively making a difference while spreading the joy!
Join forces with our team, our Joy Providers and a whole bunch of conscious individuals in one place as we aim to share the joy and help you find your awesome at the No Danger Diaries Festival!
